Our History

The Arc of East Ascension, located in Gonzales, Louisiana, was founded in 1963 by a group of parents of children with developmental disabilities. The concerned parents came together in an effort to find methods for educating their children and developing meaningful activities for their engagement. The group quickly grew into a thriving agency and primary resource for families in need of support for their child or family member with developmental disabilities.

Today, the organization offers community members all-inclusive services and referral opportunities for

individuals with developmental disabilities. These services are offered at several sites in Gonzales and surrounding areas, including South East Ascension Complex Boulevard and Purpera Avenue.

In 2009, The Arc of East Ascension established a high-spirited fundraising and community awareness project with the development of Dancing For A Cause. The project has rapidly grown into a popular community event. The fundraiser is held each year in July and showcases local community leaders by pairing them with professional dancers. The fundraiser is a wonderful way for the community to recognize The Arc of East Ascension’s efforts to fulfill its mission to enhance the quality of life for individuals with disabilities and their families through services and advocacy that support choice, independence and dignity.

The Arc of East Ascension offers multiple services to the community. We are currently transitioning our day program services to follow the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) ruling for settings. The Arc is committed to offering programs such as Day Habilitation and Supported Employment, as well as Respite services (both in-home and center-based) and independent living. Our services and support provide individuals with disabilities the opportunity to learn valuable life and work skills order to become contributing members of their community.
